Cyclon
Cyclon is my final university project for the Interactive Product Design degree I've completed.
Cyclon is a portable product for the London cyclist that records and displays data about the users ride.
The device would attach to the cyclists handlebar and be removable to allow the user to transfer the data to their home computer. The user will then be able to upload their ride data and recorded routes to the Cyclon website. If they wish, the user can share this information via the website with other Cyclon users.
Project Rationale
The Mayor of London's vision is to make London a city where people of all ages, abilities and cultures have the incentive, confidence and facilities to cycle whenever it suits them. Cycling plays a major part in developing London into an exemplary sustainable world city.
In parts of Europe, work to encourage cycling has helped improve road safety by lowering traffic speeds. In general, cities with higher levels of cycling have better road safety records than London. For example, both Copenhagen and Odense in Denmark have experienced an increase in cycling and a corresponding decrease in accidents involving cyclists. This means that by increasing motivation to cycle in London, and therefore getting more people cycling in London, would lead to a safer environment for all. One of the biggest reported excuses for not riding in London is that the roads are not safe enough so, if there were more cyclists, the roads would slow down and also encourage more people to ride.
Creating a device that encourages Londoners to ride more and that helps them become more aware of their environment, would undoubtedly improve London's environment for all. So, it can be viewed that the reason for Cyclon is to create more cyclists in the city of London and in turn strengthen the London cycle community creating a safer, greener, fitter city.
